The above view is from the tunnel area on Copper Mtn. in the El Paso Mts. looking north into Last Chance Canyon. The flat area with the orange color is Sandy's Mesa above Bickel Camp. Black Mtn. is out of the shot to the right. The snow-capped peak in the distance may be Mt Whitney in the southern Sierra's.

Hey Chuck,
Sounds like you are doing great things with the tunnel. Thanks for trying to preserve this bit of history for all of us.
I just found this picture we took of Toni's house and the surrounding buildings. It was taken on feb 16, 2002. Thought you might like to see it.
Sorry we couldn't make the work party. Do you have another trip planned? We were thinking about heading out that way this weekend. Gotta play in the Jeep before it gets too hot out there.
Hope you enjoy the picture. Talk to you soon, Mira

Burro Schmidt Tunnel Photos!

 Burro Schmidt's Famous Tunnel Entrance

Inside the Tunnel, dust in the air.

Keep your flashlight on the walls! You might see some GOLD! You'll certainly see veins of quartz and other shiny, interesting stuff.

Everybody should have their own flashlight.

 The end! Wow!
Dang the sun is bright after walking through that tunnel!

The view of the Koehn Dry Lake from the south end of Burro Schmidt's Tunnel.

From here, you can go back through the tunnel the way you came or you can walk the trail

that goes around the outside of copper mountain and back to the camp. HOWEVER! This trail is VERY STEEP & NOT easy.

Here are some photos of the cabins when there was still a caretaker:

From the mountain in back of Toni Seger's Place (The "Famous Tunnel") in May of 1977. This is Toni Seger at Walt Bickel's funeral. 1996 This is what Toni Seger's place looked like in May 1977. For those who like to measure what we lost.

From an email sent in on 4/17/06 and posted with permission:

Greetings,

My kids and I do extensive abandoned sites, nature and various other photo expeditions throughout Southern California and this was one of the first family expeditions we took. We follow the Urban Explorer's (URBEX) Code of "Take nothing but pictures; leave nothing but footprints" in all of our explorations. In our case, we take it to the level of journalistic detatchment and art.

Over this past weekend, to my horror, I heard about the destruction and theft that has occurred at the mine complex from a California State Parks Ranger. If anything, it was because of incidents like these and the unchecked growth of the region that we photograph and document sites like the Burro Schmidt Complex - to preserve some memories of the past. To note, I wrote BLM to ask them last year to post a caretaker or more diligently secure the site. I never heard back from them.

Below are links to articles I published in my LiveJournal about our visit to the mine. These photos are concidered copywritten; however, I will allow you to use them to document the pre-pillage condition of the site and to give people an idea of what treasures have been lost. Good luck in trying to recover items or raise public awareness.

John
